2019 was the year of Quidditch Turkey, we can say… There were many newly established teams that we have seen in the Turkish Quidditch Cup. One of those new teams was the Fire Ferrets. There are several similarities between the new teams, and the most interesting one is that they are established by the old players. Fire Ferrets is also one them.
Its core players are the former founders of one the very first quidditch team in Turkey: ODTÜ Hippogriffs. We can roughly say that it is some sort of a retired club for the former players!
Fire Ferrets consist of graduated university students, which means that they do not have that much for the practices; however, they want to be a part of the quidditch society and play the game and forming a team of retired seems to be the most sensible way to do so. But, don’t let the name of “retired” name mislead you. They have shown an outstanding performance in the previous TQC, considering the fact that some of its players haven’t even touched a quaffle for years. According to the founding captain of the team, Ekin Berkyürek, their ranking was not what they were hoping for; however, he claims that everyone had a marvelous time together.
As for the name of the team, Fire Ferrets, it is originated from the cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Fire Ferrets was a pro-bending team in the series, and the team’s jersey was inspired by the cartoon. It looks like the uniforms that the pro-benders were wearing. As a huge fan of the Avatar I was fascinated! Mr. Berkyürek says that he was also planning to name the first quidditch team of Turkey as Fire Ferrets if he could had gathered just enough people.
It is so lovely to see these new teams and their colorful jerseys on the tournaments. We wish the best for the the team throughout the season!
